FieldManager Named “Best of Breed” by the Center for Digital Government

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – October 14, 2002: FieldManager, a comprehensive electronic highway construction management system, was recently designated as "Best of Breed" in the GIS/Transportation Category by the Center for Digital Government. The award recognizes innovative projects and the project management methodologies applied to make the winners such a success.

The winning programs were selected from over 1,500 projects submitted by the 50 states in the Digital State Survey and evaluated by the Center's staff of experts. Programs were selected and then voted on based upon the following criteria: enterprise-wide applications, innovation, standardization and integration.

FieldManager is a software application suite that was co-developed by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Info Tech, Inc. of Gainesville, Florida. It is used for managing and tracking construction projects, documenting construction progress, initiating contractor payments and communicating with an agency's central office contract administration system. It is an easy-to-use PC-based system designed for use by state transportation agencies, local government agencies, engineering consultants and large contractors.

MDOT estimates that FieldManager saves their organization more than $20 million per year in reduced hands-on staff time, while construction projects are finished faster and contractors are paid sooner. The application has completely transformed construction project management in the state and has improved communication throughout all levels of the organization.

"FieldManager continues to be a big win for MDOT," says Douglass Couto, Chief Information Officer in MDOT's Office of Information Management.

Several other state transportation agencies have since implemented FieldManager. It is currently in use in Arkansas, Iowa, Michigan, Oklahoma, Maine and Wisconsin. Additionally, over 200 cities and counties, as well as nearly 300 consulting firms, license the software.

"We believe the report is an interesting examination of the common best practices used by government leaders to create these award-winning programs," said Cathilea Robinett, executive director of the Center. "Common themes were identified, and we believe other government leaders will greatly benefit from reading these profiles."
