GAINESVILLE, Fla. – June 13, 2001: Info Tech, Inc., a leading developer of software for the highway construction industry, is currently developing two applications specifically for handheld computers.
The two applications in development are SitePad for the Palm® Operating System and an updated version of FieldPad for Windows® CE.
FieldPad and SitePad perform similar functions in that they are both designed for use in the field by a highway construction inspector. FieldPad is a component of the FieldManager suite of products, while SitePad is designed to work with SiteManager. Both applications are part of the Trns•port construction management suite of products developed by Info Tech for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).
Shirley Daugherty of the Nebraska Department of Roads is one of several state transportation agency employees involved in the development of SitePad. She sees the convenience of using handhelds as a major benefit to her organization.
"A handheld device can be carried in a pocket or clipped to your belt and is always available to record information about quantities, equipment, personnel and remarks," Daugherty said. "Then when you're back in the office or the field trailer, a simple synchronization process will transfer your data to a desktop or laptop computer."
Daughtery feels that handhelds will not replace all laptops in the field, but will offer a less expensive equipment option for many state agencies. "Both of the handheld projects in which Info Tech is currently involved are purely customer driven," said Joe Phelan, vice president of Sales and Marketing for Info Tech. "Based on input from our clients, we created applications that are customized for the unique features of a handheld device and focus on convenience and ease of use."
SitePad is currently being beta tested by departments of transportation in Alabama and Texas. A final release is scheduled for October 2001. The current version of FieldPad has been in use since February 2001 and an updated version is expected in early 2002.
